6 Signs You Don't Know How To Use Chopsticks
Do you even chopstick? Because apparently, the majority of us have no idea what were doing. Here, 6 signs you don't know how to use chopsticks.
1. YOU USE YOUR THUMB
The thumb should be used to hold the chopsticks, but not to move them. This is where your index and middle fingers come into play; they move the chopstick, while your thumb remains firm in order to secure both the upper and lower stick.
2. YOU MOVE THEM TOGETHER
The upper stick should move, whereas the lower stick remains still. At the same time as having the upper stick move up and down, the lower stick needs to be held in-between your palm and thumb - and does not move.
3. THEY DON'T FIT YOUR HAND
Chopsticks do come in different lengths and materials, so ensure you have the right sized pair for your hand. This will enable a much better grip so you can securely hold your chopsticks and of course, enjoy your meal without worrying about dropping them!
4. THE ENDS ARE UNEVEN
Incorrectly holding your chopsticks can sometimes cause the ends to be at uneven lengths. Not only does this indicate that you're obviously holding them wrong, but it's also a sign of disrespect, especially in Asian countries, as it's said to denote a coffin.
5. YOU STICK THEM INSIDE
When using chopsticks, you need to be careful not to place them inside your food; in particular, a bowl of rice. As part of Chinese tradition, placing chopsticks inside a bowl of rice represents two incense sticks as part of a food offering to deceased ancestors.
6. YOU LOOK STRESSED
This is probably the biggest indicator. For those who weren't taught how to use chopsticks from a young age (like people from Japan), credit will always be due for those who make the effort.
